Advocacy

Deaf Advocacy Project volunteer advocates are members of the Deaf community and have completed 80 hours of training.  Advocates are people who strictly follow the rules of confidentiality.  Advocates are able to meet the victims at a police station, hospital or at a domestic violence/sexual assault (DV/SA) agency during times of crisis.  The role of an advocate is to provide the victim with support and patience as the victim figures out what the next steps he/she will take.  Advocates review with victims their rights and legal options and can inform victims of what to expect and how to prepare for a restraining order.  Going through a domestic violence and/or sexual assault experience often leaves victims feeling lost, overwhelmed and afraid.  When a victim doesn’t know who to trust, an advocate can be there.
